Appreciated people appreciate in value

cultivate an environment of development

I hate it when you appreciate me! Said no one ever.

If we want to cultivate an environment of development, we must appreciate our people. This is easier said than done because we are really good at taking people for granted!

In today’s post I share two practices that will help you better appreciate your people because appreciated people, appreciate in value.

We’re continuing our series on how to cultivate an environment of development in our organizations. Here's our key principle for this week: people who feel appreciated will appreciate in value. See, the basic idea is this. If your people know that you appreciate them; if they feel like you are grateful for them, they are going to want to grow and in fact they will grow. This is true in all facets of life. When someone feels appreciated they lean in a little bit more. They want to stretch themselves. They want to grow.

Now the challenge is that often in life we get to a place where we forget to appreciate others. We forget to be grateful for the task that we were once so grateful someone took over. We don't even say thank you anymore because it's just how it goes, or the success has become so common we forget to celebrate it. You want to make sure that you never give up appreciating your people so that they continue to appreciate in value. You can do this in two ways:

1) Learn how to and remember to publicly praise them in a meeting or in front of others. Something like, “Hey Janet, I'm so thankful for what you do here...I'm so glad for that sale... I'm so glad for that project...we couldn't be who we are without you.” Janet in that moment will feel appreciated, and appreciated people appreciate in value.

2) The second thing is a bit of a lost art. Get good writing notes. Take a moment to write down their name and appreciate the different attributes they bring to your team. Say, “I'm so grateful that I get to work with you and that you are on our team.” When we are an organization that appreciates our people they're going to lean in a little bit more, they're going to be willing to take a challenge from us, and they're going to be interested in growing with us. Appreciated people appreciate in value.

Great to be with you as always and I look forward to continuing this series. We’ve got a couple more weeks and then we'll probably take a little bit of a holiday break. I hope you're well!

Kyle
